In Book Four, Quarex has been banished by his own people (the Traffloids) for having too much empathy. He becomes the master jailor/jeweler for the Bimatterians and lives with constant guilt and remorse. He’s also the inventor of the atmobubble which uses dark energy to create and trap a suitable atmosphere around the person wearing it. Quarex longs to free the Bimatterians’ prisoners at any cost.
